Banding of hummingbirds is important so that we can learn more about these wonderful little birds. In order to band hummingbirds, you must have a special license to do so and you must be working on an approved project (or multiple projects). One such project that is being worked on in the Puget Sound Area is a long term project focused on the migration pattern and population decline in the Rufous Hummingbird.

Other questions can be answered as well and may be dependent upon re-capture of the bird later that year and subsequent years.

Movement patterns of hummingbirds before and after breeding.

The amount of time birds remain in an area.

How much hummingbirds return to the same feeders; how dependent on feeder are hummingbirds versus flowers and plants.

Dispersal pattern of immature hummingbirds when they fledge from their nest.

While it is more common to re-capture a hummingbird at the same location or nearby location, occasionally another location much further away is the site of a re-capture. When this happens, both banders are able to share information as the banding numbers are located in a central database.

The process of capturing a hummingbird is very careful. There are a few different types of traps. The one I like is similar to a crab trap that has it sides raised with a hummingbird feeder located in the middle. When the hummingbird enters the trap, it is closed by remote control. Pre-cautions are made not to harm the bird and the process of collecting the data and taking measurements lasts about two minutes. The bird is released as soon as practical.
